Following the success of the 2002 Cycle Challenge many people suggested that some form of group cycling should continue. Freewheelers is an informal club that will endeavour to meet for an occasional group bike ride.

The routes explore some of the fine countryside beyond our parish. Anyone and everyone is welcome.

The weather is the only drawback especially for winter cycling so if it’s blowing a storm, snowing, bucketing it down or really too Icy to be safe then we won’t go. Did you know that the narrow half litre “Thermos” flask fits regular drink bottle holders, great for hot soup on route.

Please keep checking the Giddings website for dates and routes or ring Michael on 07703 561931 or 01832 293598 or email.

If you have any suggestions for future rides please contact Michael michael.trolove@dial.pipex.com

Friends of Great Gidding School (Foggs)

Friends of Great Gidding School (Foggs) came into being on the 25th November 1981. Its primary objective was to raise funds for school equipment not catered for in the annual school budget. A committee was formed from willing parents and from that day to this Foggs have provided not only financial resources but also manpower to get the various projects finished. Most known forms of fund raising have been used over the years ranging from sponsored marathon runners, long distance trekking, tens of cheese and wine parties, Its a knock out tournaments, themed evenings, discos, barn dances, bbq's and quiz nights to name but a few.

The money generated by these events has been spent on many different projects ranging from computer equipment, Gymnasium equipment for the hall, library refurbishment right up to this year when a whole new reading scheme was purchased. For a school of Gidding's size it is a wonderful tribute to all parents and friends who have put so much into Foggs and made it so successful.

To keep you informed of Foggs events, updates will appear in the events page.

For more information contact Mary Reid 01832 293657

FOGGS now has its own website: www.foggs.plus.com

Jubilee Wood Project

During the spring of 2003 members of the village have planted 1,255 trees and shrubs to develop a small woodland on the Top Allotment, to the north of Mill Road which will be known as Jubilee Wood. They have planted about three and a half acres of mainly local indigenous tree species (that is, Oak, Ash, Common Maple and Wild Cherry). There will also be room for some other specimen trees as well. It is hoped that a clearing can be left in the middle in order to develop a small nature reserve with paths leading into it.

Tree Donations
A lot of people have already offered to donate to the scheme and reserved spaces are being taken up fast. However there is still plenty of time to donate if you would like to do so. Donations can be made at two levels. If you wish to make a monetary contribution it is suggested that £5 or £10 will help. This money can then go towards future maintenance costs.

Alternatively some may wish to donate a tree - perhaps plant it even. I have arranged to purchase some slightly more mature container grown trees with mulch mats, tree guards and stakes for £25 each. All trees donated will be code tagged and recorded in a permanent record for posterity. Space will be provided alongside the internal footpaths for planting donated trees. These can be planted at a later stage. Individuals can request more or less whatever type of tree that they wish but it is suggested that we should aim for good autumn or spring colours and recommended species are Silver Birch, Autumn Cherry, Flowering Cherry, Flowering Crab Apple, Rowan, Laburnum, Acacia or Purple Beech.
