Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving

Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving

Last October, a Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving for those who had died was held in St Michael’s Church. The aim of the service was to provide people with an opportunity to pause, reflect and give thanks for the lives of loved ones.

This year the service will be held in Alconbury Parish Church on Sunday 4th November at 3pm. As before, the names of those who have died will be read out. During the service, there will also be the opportunity to light a candle in memory of a loved one.

If you would like to have someone remembered at this service, please email the Rev’d Mary Jepp at m.jepp@btinternet.com or telephone 01480 890284. Alternatively names may be given to either of the Churchwardens. Names may be added to the list on the day.
Start Time: 15:00
Date: 2012-11-04

Great Gidding welcomes guests from Denmark for Laura and Mads beautiful wedding

On a gloriously hot and sunny day, the wedding took place in St Michael’s Church on Saturday 18th August of Laura Burgess to Mads Jørgensen.

Laura is currently the Rector of St Botolph without Aldgate in London, whilst Mads is a freelance Media Producer.

The service was conducted by the Reverend Lucy Winkett, a friend and colleague of Laura’s during her five year post at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Music played an important part in the service. The organist was James O’ Donnell (Master of the Music, Westminster Abbey), and the small group of singers were directed by Andrew Carwood (Director of Music, St Paul’s Cathedral).

As the bridegroom hails from Denmark, before the service began the congregation were taught a Danish hymn which was sung during the Signing of the Registers. During the course of the service, anthems by Britten, Walton and Purcell were sung. The bible readings were read by Claire Burnill-Maier and Jørgen Jensen: whilst the prayers were led by Reverend Erik Berggren, Reverend Margarithe Veen and Reverend Suzanne Webb.

As the happy couple left the church, they were greeted by the sound of the bells, a fitting climax to a wonderful and joyous occasion.

UPDATE: Harvest Festival Invitation, Sunday 16th September 2012

This year our Harvest Festival arrangements are different.  Firstly, the service which will be an informal All Age Family Service, takes place in the morning, starting at 11 am.  Secondly after the service, we continue our celebrations as we move across to Crown Cottage (by kind invitation of Sue Shepherd) and enjoy a Harvest Lunch together.

So may I invite you to come and join us.  The service will include all the favourite harvest hymns as well as offering an opportunity to give thanks for the wonder of God’s creation and the food we enjoy.

You are welcome to attend both Service and the Lunch – alternatively you might like to come to one or other of the events and this is also fine!

Times:
Harvest Family Service – 11 am
Lunch in the Garden at Crown Cottage – 12.15 pm

Finally, it would help with the catering arrangements if you could contact either Lois Jordan (293178) or Mary Read (293657) and let them know if you are coming to the lunch.

I look forward to seeing you.

Mary Jepp

Summer baptisms in Great Gidding

There were two Baptisms in St Michael’s Church in July, welcoming two young people into the Christian community in Great Gidding.

Firstly on Sunday 8th July, the baptism of Alice Helen Nunns took place. Mum and Dad, Charlotte and Michael Nunns, moved into Ludington Road last August. The godparents were Laura and Chris Tate of Molesworth.

A fortnight later on Sunday 22nd July, the baptism offered the opportunity of welcoming back someone who had grown up in the village. Nicolas Tebbutt, (son of Vivian & Bill Tebutt of Main Street) and his partner Mel, brought daughter Amelie Una to St Michael’s Church to be christened.

The Reverend Mary Jepp officiated on both occasions.

Harvest Festival

Whilst still a fair way off, please put Sunday 16th September in your diary as that’s the date we shall celebrate the traditional Harvest Festival Thanksgiving.

This year it will be slightly different for two reasons. Firstly the service will take place in the morning at St Michael’s Church starting at 11am. Then after the service we adjourn across the road to Crown Cottage (by kind invitation of Sue Shepherd) for a ‘bring and share’ lunch.

Please watch out for more details.
