Folium Architects

Folium Architects

Folium Architects works in the authentic tradition of classical and vernacular architecture.

The practice, which was started (as Jan Maciag Architects) in 1995, aims to produce and promote architecture that offers a realistic alternative for those clients who appreciate the many benefits of building in a traditional manner. Intrinsic to this work is a belief that traditional architecture has a proven quality and will endure the test of time and passing fashion.

Much of the work undertaken concerns the sensitive alteration of existing buildings as well as new buildings in architecturally sensitive areas. An expert knowledge of traditional materials and detail allows for a seamless integration of new work with the old. There is a respect for historical precedent that is also alive, inventive and aspirational.

Superfast broadband begins to rollout – but Gidding has to wait TWO more years!!

Superfast broadband begins to rollout - but Gidding has to wait TWO more years!!

Dear Broadband Champions,

We are delighted to inform you to that we will be celebrating the first Connecting Cambridgeshire programme green cabinets going live with superfast (fibre) broadband on Monday 25 November.

We will mark this milestone with the unveiling of a new cabinet in the rural village of Grafham. This is one of ten new cabinets going live across the county at the same time, with many more to follow in the coming months.

More details will be announced on Monday 25 November on the Connecting Cambridgeshire website, where people can see when local cabinets go live on the ‘my area’ pages and how to upgrade to superfast broadband.

We have had fantastic support from all over Cambridgeshire for the broadband programme, which has brought together local councils and our partners, working closely with our broadband champion, businesses, communities to make it happen.

We know many people have been eagerly anticipating the first phase of delivery since the signing of the contract in March – when we set the expectation that BT would start delivering fibre broadband for homes and businesses by the end of this year.

This marks the start of the roll-out. We are on track for fibre based broadband to be available to 98% of premises by the end of December 2015, which will make Cambridgeshire one of the best connected counties in the country.

We wanted you to be among the first to know and will follow this up with a Connecting Cambridgeshire Brief at the end of November.

Kind regards

Connecting Cambridgeshire team

This is taken from their website:

Great Gidding
Premises in Great Gidding are included in the Connecting Cambridgeshire programme. This means that, by the end of 2015, there will be improvements to the broadband infrastructure that will enable many homes and businesses to receive superfast broadband speeds (minimum 24Mbps)* while others will be able to receive fibre broadband speeds of between 2Mbps and 24 Mbps.

Superfast broadband is forecast to be available in your area between September and December 2015.

The scheduling for each phase depends upon the outcome of surveys and more detailed planning so we cannot be more precise until these are completed. We will be updating the website regularly as the information becomes available.
The broadband speed you will get depends on a number of factors including the length of your line from the telephone exchange or green roadside cabinet, the line quality, and the equipment and internal wiring within your premises.
Connecting Cambridgeshire is working to ensure that everyone in the Connecting Cambridgeshire programme gets as fast a speed as possible given their geographical location. Some premises may be particularly hard to reach meaning that a connection to the fibre network may not be possible. Where appropriate, alternative technology may be used to provide broadband connectivity (minimum 2Mbps). These technologies are likely to be delivered later in the roll-out – but still before the end of 2015.

Your area has a Broadband Champion, who has been helping us raise awareness of the programme and encouraging people to register their demand for superfast broadband.

Painting exhibition by Krystyna Wojcik and Paul Joseph-Crank

Painting exhibition by Krystyna Wojcik and Paul Joseph-Crank

An exhibition of landscape and cityscape paintings by Great Gidding residents Krystyna Wojcik and Paul Joseph-Crank will be on display at The Dolby Gallery, Oundle from the 13th to 27th April 2013.

Paul and Krystyna both work in acrylics and watercolours and as husband and wife they occasionally find themselves sketching and painting from the same subject. Some of the results of their land and city interpretations will be displayed alongside each other at their joint exhibition ‘LandscapeCityscape’.

Paul studied fine art at Manchester Polytechnic before taking up a career in graphic design and illustration, and Krystyna trained as an art teacher before joining forces with Paul to set up their own design business.

Travel is a strong influence for both but whilst Paul is drawn to light and dark and patterning elements within a city environment, Krystyna’s paintings are darkly atmospheric across land and skyline.

Latest news from thw Connecting Cambridgeshire campaign

We are delighted to announce that the winning bidder has been chosen to roll-out better broadband across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough over the next three years.

Cambridgeshire County Council Cabinet approved the contract award http://www.connectingcambridgeshire.co.uk/2013/02/connecting-cambridgeshire-lands-super-broadband-deal/ to BT today (4 February 2013) – taking us a step nearer to beginning the roll-out in 2013.

At the Cabinet meeting your support for the campaign was acknowledged as key to its success.

New FAQs have been posted on the website and we will be posting regular updates.

You’ve probably got lots more questions and we will try and answer them but we won’t be able to give much more detail until the contract is signed.

As always we want you to be well informed and therefore we will be arranging a meeting involving BT to discuss the way forward. We anticipate this will be towards the end of March but we will let you know as soon as we have a firm date.

Best Regards

The Connecting Cambridgeshire project team

Connecting Cambridgeshire campaign success – thanks to you

Connecting Cambridgeshire campaign success – thanks to you

2013 Report from the Connecting Cambridgeshire campaign

Thanks to everyone who has supported the Connecting Cambridgeshire campaign to bring superfast broadband to Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Close to 24,000 people across the county have registered their demand for better broadband since May 2012 making it one of the fastest growing and biggest broadband campaigns in the country. Every registration counts to show suppliers the level of demand for better broadband across the county.

This campaign success has been achieved with the fantastic support of 100 Broadband Champions, local Councillors and organisations such as Cambridgeshire ACRE, who have encouraged their communities to register.

A range of local case studies showing how households and home-based businesses will benefit from better broadband have been posted on the Connecting Cambridgeshire website at www.connectingcambridgeshire.co.uk

What happens next?

The next stage of the Connecting Cambridgeshire programme will be to award the contract to a supplier in February 2013 to roll-out better broadband for all over the next three years.

Connecting Cambridgeshire is one of several UK broadband delivery projects in the ‘pipeline’ and will be seeking State Aid exemption during the final stages of the complex procurement process before finalising the contract award, with the sign-off and roll-out plan to follow.

Cambridgeshire County Council has already committed up to £20 million with £3 million from Peterborough City Council together with £6.75 million from the Government funding body BDUK for the roll-out of superfast broadband by 2015.

Cambridge’s share of the £50 million Super Connected Cities Government funding will be in addition to this investment in superfast broadband to stimulate growth and help communities and businesses to thrive, particularly in rural areas.

Regular updates will be posted on the Connecting Cambridgeshire website to keep you informed and Cambridgeshire ACRE will provide links to these via its regular monthly e-News Digest.

Great reasons to support the GREAT Great Gidding shop

Great reasons to support the GREAT Great Gidding shop

Great Gidding Stores

We’re lucky in Gidding to have the only village shop in the area. The range of services offered by Aruna and Jed is terrific. Did you know, for example, that all the following are available from, or through, the Great Gidding village shop?

● Daily papers, of course, but also magazines. If you regularly buy a magazine in the supermarket, why not order it through Aruna instead?

● A range of groceries and general household goods for those
annoying times when you run out of something essential
and you need it now!

● Dry cleaning service. Just drop in your cleaning and collect
from the shop.

● Prescription service.  Wellside Surgery will deliver your medication to the shop for you to collect

● Nets of logs and kindling

● New! 12.5kg sacks of potatoes

● New! A winning Lotto ticket!

The shop is the hub of the village – you can advertise goods for sale, local events or other attractions; and tickets for village events can usually be bought from Aruna.

By supporting the shop, you are helping to maintain a great village facility. And it helps you, too. By shopping in the village, we save time and precious fuel.

With new, longer, opening hours, our shop offers convenience, great service and helpful and personal attention from Aruna and Jed.

We’re so lucky to have a shop at the heart of our village – it’s up to us to ensure we keep it that way!

If we all committed to buying at least our milk, papers and magazines there, we’ll be helping ourselves, helping the shop and helping our village community!

Get Cambridgeshire Connected – Join the broadband campaign!

Get Cambridgeshire Connected – Join the broadband campaign!

You can help to bring fast, reliable broadband to Peterborough and Fenland, which is vital for our businesses and communities to thrive.

The plan is to provide access to superfast broadband to at least 90% of homes and businesses across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and better broadband access to all other areas by 2015. A countywide broadband campaign to Get Cambridgeshire Connected has been launched through the Connecting Cambridgeshire website. We need residents, businesses (you can register in both categories), parishes and community groups to show suppliers where there is demand for broadband to attract investment.

Please register your support using the online form at www.connectingcambridgeshire.co.uk it will only take a few minutes to register and doesn’t commit you to anything.

Please encourage your friends, family, neighbours, colleagues, customers and suppliers to also join the campaign!
