St Michael’s Church closure

St Michael’s Church will be closed for the foreseeable future. At the moment the church is full of scaffolding and therefore inaccessible.

St Michael's Church Great Gidding closed for repairsRestoration in the north aisle being carried out

This is to enable the appropriate work of restoration in the north aisle to be carried out, arising from damage to the plaster as a result of the lead theft. This involves the removal and re-plastering of the wall. This work will take up to six weeks.

At the same time, the opportunity has been taken to remove the cracked plaster from the north side of the chancel arch, so as to expose the stonework behind and determine what work needs to be carried out to rectify the situation with the movement here.

Health and safety

This work obviously creates a dusty atmosphere. Additionally, when the plastering begins, this introduces plaster dust etc into the atmosphere, which not good for anyone to inhale. Therefore health and safety decrees we shut the church until such time as everything has been resolved and building is safe to use..

Therefore, if for any reason, you require access to the church, please contact John DeVal first on 01832 293417.

This closure means:

Evensong on Sunday 21st October is cancelled
The 11am service of Holy Communion on Sunday 4th November is moved from St Michael’s to St John’s Church, Little Gidding.

North and south aisles roof restoration

Intensive restoration has been carried out on both the north and south aisles following the roof lead theft.

Chancel roof restoration

The major re-roofing project carried out on the chancel was originally scheduled for 2015 and has no connection with the theft.

As Mary, Brian and Neville prepared St Michael’s Church bells for the Remembrance Sunday Service in Great Gidding we had a sneak view of the church tower and steeple and then out onto the parapet to see the views across the village towards Hamerton, Luddington and north towards Sawtry.

Chilli evening a huge success – thank you!

Chilli evening a huge success - thank you!

A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed to making the Chilli Evening with the “Auction of Promises” such a huge success. It was a really enjoyable evening, mainly as a result of the wonderful food and drink, followed by the excellent performance of our auctioneer who succeeded in persuading people to bid generously (and occasionally unwittingly!) for the many items up for auction. We were delighted to welcome friends from Winwick and to be able to “get our own back” – in the nicest possible way! The evening raised the staggering sum of over £2000 for church funds.

None of this would have happened but for the hard work of Mary Read, Sue Shepherd, Jane Edwards, Anthea Keck and all the team who organised the event. Yet this effort would have been for nothing had not the evening received the tremendous support it did from people far and wide.

Once again thank you to everyone for your time, generosity and support.

UPDATE: Harvest Festival Invitation, Sunday 16th September 2012

UPDATE: Harvest Festival Invitation, Sunday 16th September 2012

This year our Harvest Festival arrangements are different.  Firstly, the service which will be an informal All Age Family Service, takes place in the morning, starting at 11 am.  Secondly after the service, we continue our celebrations as we move across to Crown Cottage (by kind invitation of Sue Shepherd) and enjoy a Harvest Lunch together.

So may I invite you to come and join us.  The service will include all the favourite harvest hymns as well as offering an opportunity to give thanks for the wonder of God’s creation and the food we enjoy.

You are welcome to attend both Service and the Lunch – alternatively you might like to come to one or other of the events and this is also fine!

Times:
Harvest Family Service – 11 am
Lunch in the Garden at Crown Cottage – 12.15 pm

Finally, it would help with the catering arrangements if you could contact either Lois Jordan (293178) or Mary Read (293657) and let them know if you are coming to the lunch.

I look forward to seeing you.

Mary Jepp

The Great Gidding Close Up Quiz – The Answers

The Great Gidding Close Up Quiz - The Answers

Welcome to The Great Gidding Close up Quiz.

If you lived in the village at the time of the Golden Jubilee celebration in 2002 you will recall that we offered a paper based quiz that asked you to identify close up photographs of certain locations around the Parish of Great Gidding. This is an updated version to accommodate the computer and smart phone generation. You may be able to guess some locations from the comfort of your seat in front of the computer but a walk round the village will nail the difficult locations and keep your eyes open when travelling out towards the parish boundaries. All the photographs are taken from public areas. Google Street View may help in some cases.

How to enter – Identify where or what the photograph is, either by house number or descriptive location. The closer the better. When you have identified as many locations as you can fill in the comments box at the foot of this page using a 1,2,3 order and send it in.

The quiz will run until 1pm on Saturday the 23rd June. The winner will be announced at the Mid Summer Picnic on the following day. A wider view photograph will also be posted with location text after this date.

A modest prize will be awarded to the most accurate entry.

Good luck

Polio and the ‘Purple Pinky’ and crocuses in front of the church

Polio is a terrible crippling disease.  It was once the major cause of disability.  Before 1988 there were over 350,000 cases reported per year worldwide.  Now it is down to about a 1,000 cases per year.  India use to have more cases than anywhere else.  Now it has reported only one single case in the last 18 months.

Polio charity crocuses outside St Michael's Church Great Gidding

This is down to 25 years of hard work on the part of Rotary International and other agencies.  For years the programme has depended on charitable giving and the precious time of individuals prepared to go out and help, at their own expense, in vaccination clinics.  At last we are on the brink.  One final push is needed to get rid of this dreadful disease once and for all.  If we don’t make that effort now and leave off it will come back.  That final effort will cost money.  Bill Gates has generously contributed $355 million but there is still a need to raise a further $200 million world wide to see it through.

During national immunisation days in India, as many as 65 million children are immunised. Volunteers hold these days every six weeks, visiting remote villages and slum areas to deliver the life-saving vaccine. Although polio is nearly wiped out, work has to continue through this next generation of children to be sure to eradicate the disease for good.  Booths are set up in major cities, attracting school children and families, who will travel for miles to protect their children.  After vaccination each child has a finger dipped in purple dye for control purposes.

In order to bring your attention to the vaccination programme purple crocuses have been planted all over the UK.  It is hoped that the 500 bulbs planted in front of the church last autumn will eventually multiply to make a magnificent springtime display.  When you look at them please think about all the children walking around with purple “pinkies” who will now have a better chance in life.  It will be wonderful when the day comes when no one else will ever have to suffer from polio.  This can be a real success story!  Will you please help?

Donations to the “Rotary Club of Kimbolton Castle” can be handed to Tony Scott, 15 Mill Road, Great Gidding or to Jed and Aruna at the village shop.
