As Mary, Brian and Neville prepared St Michael’s Church bells for the Remembrance Sunday Service in Great Gidding we had a sneak view of the church tower and steeple and then out onto the parapet to see the views across the village towards Hamerton, Luddington and north towards Sawtry.

Saturday 13th July saw the opening of a two day art exhibition in St Michael’s Church as part of the Great Gidding Gala Week festivities. There was a wide range of high quality work from numerous villagers and also displays by Great Gidding School and the After School Club.
Thank you to all who took part and to the organisers for putting on such a good show.
A new event for The Giddings! Following the weekend of the Eliot Festival at Little Gidding there will be a series of cultural and fun events held in and around the village. From Monday 8th July through to Sunday 14th July there will be poetry, arts, crafts, lunches, cultural visits and a couple of fun events to cater for all tastes.

Rogation Sunday is traditionally the Sunday when the rural community walk around their village to places where crops grow and animals are kept, to seek God’s blessing on their work, and especially to pray for a good harvest.
Rogation Sunday falls on 5th May this year, and we are marking it with a Rogationtide Walk, followed by a picnic.
We meet in St Michael’s Church at 11am, and then walk around the village stopping at a number of points for readings and prayers. Please come dressed for all weathers! Some rain won’t put us off.
Afterwards, we go to Churchside House (John De Val’s home next to the church) where we will enjoy our picnic – outdoors if fine, indoors if wet!
Please come and join us and bring your own picnic – drinks (of all sorts) will be provided.
Please do come along and find out the acheivements and challenges faced by your local church.
Over the last few years, many things have happened in St Michael’s Church which have enhanced the beauty of this place of worship as well as improving the facilities.
On Sunday 21st April we are holding a Service of Thanksgiving to reflect our thanks to God for his goodness as well as recognising the generosity of so many people, both in terms of giving and creating. After the service there will be refreshments.
May we extend a warm welcome to you to join as at this service. St Michael’s Church is an important part of the infastructure of the village, and this is obviously recognised by the number of people who give so generously of their time, money and talents.
The service starts at 3pm.
A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed to making the Chilli Evening with the “Auction of Promises” such a huge success. It was a really enjoyable evening, mainly as a result of the wonderful food and drink, followed by the excellent performance of our auctioneer who succeeded in persuading people to bid generously (and occasionally unwittingly!) for the many items up for auction. We were delighted to welcome friends from Winwick and to be able to “get our own back” – in the nicest possible way! The evening raised the staggering sum of over £2000 for church funds.
None of this would have happened but for the hard work of Mary Read, Sue Shepherd, Jane Edwards, Anthea Keck and all the team who organised the event. Yet this effort would have been for nothing had not the evening received the tremendous support it did from people far and wide.

“AY CARAMBA!” If you were passing down Main Street on the rainy Saturday night of 26 January, you may have noticed the odd sombrero wearing stranger approaching the village hall. You may have heard the strumming of Mexican music, the faint waft of chilli. This was the spectacular ‘Chilli Night and Auction of Promises’ put on on behalf of St Michael’s Church to boost much needed funds.
It was difficult to tell if the occasional tear in people’s eyes were caused by the extra helping of the jalepino sauce, by awe and wonder at the superb Photoshop Mexican montage of images of Gidding scenes (plus occasional residents) or indeed the eye watering generosity of guests bidding for trailer loads of manure or sacks of local potatoes through to cakes and wine or a ride on a train.
The gifts and ‘promises’ were varied and wondrous. The food was generously donated and delicious – the auctioneer was both focused and funny.
The organisers would like to thank everybody who took such an active part and made it such a fun evening. Special thanks to the odd strangers from Winwick who ventured over the border and dug deep into their pockets to help us all raise over £2000 for our Church. We could not have done it without you, whether as guests or helping with contributions towards the food and promises. So Muchas Gracias and Adios Amigos!

Blast away the winter blues with a night of chilli and tequila, and auction of promises, at the village hall on Saturday 26th January.
The bar opens at 7pm, followed by a chilli meal (mince or veggie option if you prefer), and then the bidding begins!
