Minutes of a Meeting of the Parish Council held in the Village Hall, Great Gidding on Tuesday 15th January 2013 at 7.30pm.

 

Present Cllrs Alexander (Chairman), Hayden (Vice Chairman), Hodson Howden, Trolove, Giddens, James, District Cllr Tysoe and Clerk

 

1.13 Apologies for absence – none

2.13 Minutes of 18th December 2012 with amendment were approved and signed

3.13 Matters arising (information only)

4.13 Members declaration of interest for agenda items Cllr James 18.13

5.13 Dispensation Procedure for Councillors to set budget and annual precept.   It was agreed to review this following further information obtained by the clerk attending an SLCC meeting on 22nd February

6.13 Ash dieback FERA Inspection report had not yet been received

7.13 Common Sense Risk Management of Trees – Cllr Trolove, Tree Warden had read the document and it was agreed that he would continue to carry out an informal inspection of trees on Parish Land – arable field and grazing land.   The VH & RG committee had added the trees on the Recreation Ground to their monthly inspection.

8.13 BT account – the annual line rental had been paid and direct debit would now be a monthly payment plan.

9.13 Jubilee Wood – 10 year commemoration of planting 2013.   Clerk to confirm costing for the Woodside Arbour and fixing posts and bring to the February meeting for approval

10.13 Jointly Funded Minor Highway Improvements scheme 2012/13 for Chapel End.   A letter from one resident had been received objecting to the proposed scheme.   This was discussed and consideration given to the concerns expressed in the letter.   The proposed scheme was however agreed to be an improvement on existing conditions.  A copy of the letter of objection to be sent to the County Council who make final decision to go ahead.

11.13 Fields in Trust –Cllr Alexander and Cllr Hayden signed the Deed of Dedication for QEII status, witnessed by Cllr James.   The Land Registry had amended paperwork for correspondence to be c/o clerk, Great & Little Gidding Parish Council.   Once the paperwork has been signed by Fields in Trust a plaque will be forwarded for installation at the Recreation Ground to commemorate obtaining the status

12.13 Clerks training –for information the clerk will be attending a Society of Local Council Clerks meeting on 22nd February when a member of HMRC will talk on Real Time PAYE and further information on dispensations will be given

13.13 Representative reports

Rights of Way – Cllr Giddens is working with the County Council to replace missing ROW signs

Tree warden & Jubilee wood  – see 6/7/9.13 above

Highways – an email had been received from a resident in Chapel End asking for this road to be included in the County Council gritting route.   Email to be forwarded to the CC and clerk to send details of 2012-13 gritting route criteria to resident for information.  Chapel End road had received some patch repairs.

Police – Several Cllrs reported recent disturbances in the village and it was agreed that the clerk should write to the Housing Association to keep them informed

Finance & Charities -Cllr Hodson reported that we continue to work within budget

Village Hall & Recreation Ground –The Pavilion had been broken into twice and it was agreed that this should be reported to the police by the VH & RG committee.   The Pavilion is in poor condition and a decision will have to be made shortly as to its removal and whether to consider a replacement.   The monthly inspection of play equipment had brought to light a rotten post on the plank bridge – the post had been removed for safety.   It was discussed whether to repair or replace this equipment and it was agreed to remove and not replace.

Allotments- Several sheds had been broken into and owners have reported this to the police.

Community Liaison – no reports had been received from community groups

15.13 Planning – no plans received

16.13 Visit to HDC offices to meet staff Friday 25th January 2pm – this had been postponed, new date to be given

17.13 Date of Annual Parish Meeting and suggestions for speakers – it was agreed to hold this on 3rd Tuesday in March (this is also when the PCSO will be attending)

18.13 Correspondence received

. Heavy Commercial Vehicle Strategy (HCV) webpage – Cllrs invited to look at this online with a view to completing the survey

. Grazing Land – a letter had been received from a resident asking that if any grazing land should come up for rent if they could be considered as a tenant – clerk to hold on file.

The Olympic feel good factor rumbles on

Team Gidding competed in a three team, three “sports” challenge at the recent Winwick Garden Fete.  A competition based on Aunt Sally, Northamptonshire Table Skittles and 9 pin Outdoor Bowling on tricky terrain. The rules were sort of agreed and each team, Winwick, Hamerton and Great Gidding commenced battle. At the the final count Gidding had more points mostly by being able to hit the doll in Aunt Sally although the smugness was nearly wiped off when  a later arrival (who will be known as Mrs S) for the Hamerton team hit the doll on the first three throws having never seen or played the game.

We have named the trophy Call me “Dave” in solidarity with all the Dave’s and David’s that live in Winwick. We hope you had a good fete and there will be an opportunity to win back “Dave” in the near future.

Baking

 

  1. 1.  Apple Cake
Ingredients

  • 225g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
  • 450g cooking apples
  • Finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • 225g caster sugar, plus extra for dredging
  • 3 large eggs
  • 225g self-raising flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 25g ground almonds
  • 1 tbsp demerara sugar

 

 

METHOD

 

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan160°C/gas4. Grease a deep 23-24cm springform cake tin and line with baking paper. Peel, core and cut the apples into 1cm pieces, and toss with the lemon juice.

2. Using an electric hand whisk, cream together the butter, caster sugar and lemon zest in a bowl until pale and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, 1 at a time, adding a little flour with each addition to keep the mixture smooth.

3. Sift the remaining flour and the baking powder into the bowl and fold in with the ground almonds. Drain the apple pieces well, then stir into the mixture.

4. Spoon into the prepared cake tin, lightly level the top and sprinkle with the demerara sugar. Bake in the oven for 1 hour or until well-risen, brown and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. If the cake starts to look a little too brown, cover with a sheet of baking paper after about 45 minutes.

5. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes. Remove the cake from the tin and place on a serving plate. Dredge heavily with the extra caster sugar.

Back by popular demand

August Bank Holiday sees the return of the popular Aunt Sally Tournament which will be held at the Fox & Hounds, Great Gidding.

The projected start time will be 2pm and the format and rules will be similar to the 2011 event. Last year we didn’t bother because of the relentless wet and then the highly successful Olympic games got in the way.

Further updates will follow and we will have a practice evening soon.

If any one would like to sponsor the event with a bottle of fizz for the winner  then please let me know.

What a cracking day for the school fete! Scorching sun brought lots of parents, children and village residents along to Great Gidding School on Saturday 6th July for the annual school fete.

This year a very special guest, Warwick Davis, kindly opened the fete and made us all laugh with his warmth and wit – along with some very unpretentious name-dropping! Lots of stalls displaying everything from temporary tattoos to tempting cupcakes kept everyone happy and the afternoon was a great success.

A new July event for Great Gidding

A new event for The Giddings! Following the weekend of the Eliot Festival at Little Gidding there will be a series of cultural and fun events held in and around the village. From Monday 8th July through to Sunday 14th July there will be poetry, arts, crafts, lunches, cultural visits and a couple of fun events to cater for all tastes.

Arts, crafts, photographs and sculpture by residents of Gidding and the surrounding villages  to be held in St Michael’s Church between 2pm _ 5pm followed by an evening concert. Music by Bach & Handel featuring Fergus Black (organ) and Leslie Crowson (tenor) Tickets £4 pay at door.

Michael is runner-up in ‘Green Champion of the Year’ award

Michael is runner-up in 'Green Champion of the Year' award

This year’s Green Heart Community Awards, backed by the News & Crier and organised by Huntingdonshire District Council, took place at the Burgess Hall in St Ives. Judges received more than 30 entries for six categories including: Best Primary School, Best Secondary School/College, Green Champion of the Year, Best Wildlife or Nature Initiative, Best Environmental Project and Best Business Environmental Project. The shortlisted nominees for each of the categories were invited to an evening dedicated to them and their hard work in helping to improve the environment of Huntingdonshire.

Great Gidding Parish Council nominated Michael Trolove for the Green Heart Community award and he came runner up at the awards ceremony held at the Burgess Hall on Saturday 15th June.

The Parish Council’s nomination:

Working with the Parish Council and the wildlife Trust, Michael Trolove has always been a valuable asset to the wildlife of Great Gidding.

In the last year Michael has dedicated a great deal of time to the renovation of two village ponds and installed a dipping platform. He has recently prepared a third pond in the Jubilee Wood and as a trained Newt Officer, Michael has also developed the Great Gidding Newt Trail; popular with villagers and visitors alike.

As a Tree Warden, Michael keeps a full list of trees on site and all of them have been given a numbered tag for identification. He has been in discussions with DEFRA concerning Ash Dieback Disease and spends much time planting trees around the Parish, organising a planting event and pop up coffee shop, enjoyed by all for the Diamond Jubilee.

Michael works hard on the maintenance of Jubilee Wood, monitoring, weeding, planting new trees and mulching and in the last year added some old varieties of fruit tree to the planting scheme, created log piles and built bug boxes to further encourage wildlife to the area.

Michael Trolove is instrumental in co-ordinating the upkeep of the Jubilee Woods, ponds in the area and all the trees in the Parish and demonstrates log-term commitment to protecting and improving open space within the village of Great Gidding.

Well done Michael. Very well deserved.

Long Distance Walkers Association

If you like walking you may be interested to know about a national organisation that exists to promote walking longer distance as a recreational or challenge activity.

The Long Distance Walkers Association  (LDWA) promotes distance walking through its regional groups. For example the nearest LDWA group to Great Gidding is the Beds, Bucks and Northamptonshire  group who meet regularly on Thursdays for 15 mile walks and Sundays for 20 mile walks in the counties mentioned.

As  stated previously the distances walked  range from 15 miles and 20 miles. There are other organised events where greater distances are covered  and these are regarded as challenge events. The ultimate being 100 miles in 48 hours !

All walks have a leader who is competent in map reading and social skills to ensure you enjoy the walk . They must count you out and count you back in and deal with any on route issue. Start points usually have decent car parking for the rural based groups.

Picnic time on the Recreation Field

Sunday, June 2nd  on Great Gidding Recreation Field and if even just the weather repeats itself as last year then it will be a grand day out.

The Big Lunch is all about community coming together to share a meal which in our case is more of a picnic but the aims are still the same. Meeting neighbour’s and villagers who you don’t often see, catching up with all the latest news or just taking up the challenge of the mass rounders game.

Have a Field Day is the formal recognition that our Recreation Field is now in trust and will never be built on

Rogationtide walk and picnic, Sunday 5th May

Rogation Sunday is traditionally the Sunday when the rural community walk around their village to places where crops grow and animals are kept, to seek God’s blessing on their work, and especially to pray for a good harvest.

Rogation Sunday falls on 5th May this year, and we are marking  it with a Rogationtide Walk, followed by a picnic.

We meet in St Michael’s Church at 11am, and then walk around the village stopping at a number of points for readings and prayers. Please come dressed for all weathers! Some rain won’t put us off.

Afterwards, we go to Churchside House (John De Val’s home next to the church) where we will enjoy our picnic – outdoors if fine, indoors if wet!

Please come and join us and bring your own picnic – drinks (of all sorts) will be provided.
