Key points from the District Councillor

Key points from the District Councillor

Key points for the 2018/19 Council Year from Tim Alban, District Councillor for Stilton, Folksworth & Washingley Ward

New Council Year – New Council Ward
In May 2018 I was elected as one of two District Councillors to represent the new Stilton, Folksworth & Washingley ward and I have been busier during the past twelve months than at any time in the preceding 3 years. The ward is about 11 miles from Wansford in the north to Little Gidding in the south and even with my fellow ward councillor, Marge Beuttell and I splitting the ward in half, I am still the first point of contact for residents in 6 villages and 3 hamlets.

Getting to all the Parish Councils continues to be a challenge, especially as a number of them meet on the same evening but I have visited them all and enjoy working with the various Parish Councillors and Parish Clerks.

Marge and I also work well with our County Councillor Simon Bywater, especially when our areas of responsibility overlap.

I am fortunate to be the Chairman of the Council’s Customers & Partnerships – Overview & Scrutiny Panel, which covers some of the areas I am most interested in such as leisure and the environment.

Planning
The most time-consuming issue this year has been planning – something I had very little to do with in my first 3 years as a District Councillor. Although there hasn’t been much for me to be involved with in the Giddings with regards to planning, applications in Stilton and Holme have involved significant amount of work.

Other Issues
Over the last year I’ve worked to tackle fly-posting, dog fouling, dangerous and illegal parking, faulty and damaged signs, fly-tipping, pot holes, litter as well as issues for individual residents. Sometimes I’ve worked on my own, other times I have worked with Marge, Simon and some of our excellent Parish Councillors.  The most unusual issue I have dealt with this year (if not ever) was the wayward portaloo and damaged signs at the junction of Milking Slade and Chapel end.

District Wide
This year the District Council part of the Council Tax went up by 2.66%, a new parking regime has been introduced so that charges better reflect the time used and changes were made to way the Council handles enquiries from residents who prefer to access more information online.

What a fantastic success ‘More Than Just a Plant Sale’ turned out to be!

What a fantastic success ‘More Than Just a Plant Sale’ turned out to be!

Visitors thronged in from 5.30pm on the dot and a combination of events held during the evening raised funds for Jubilee Wood Projects – a beautiful area for everyone to enjoy.

Alongside the plant sale there were information stalls on bee keeping and local wildlife, a children’s craft stall, a bird quiz and stalls selling garden bric-a-brac and garden metalwork by Ped Baker Metalcraft.

Food and drink

Tasty barbecue wraps were provided by Andrew Underwood and Dick Downer and Michael Trolove stoically manned the ‘Percy Thrower’ bar.

Gardeners’ questions and raffle

The Gardeners’ Question Time was well attended and a whole selection of topics were covered by two very experienced and knowledgeable professional gardeners, George Thorpe and Tony Arnold (often to be heard on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire) helped by our own village expert Margi Comeau. The evening finished with the obligatory raffle with a wonderful selection of garden-themed hampers as prizes, kindly organised by Jan Downer.

Bird quiz winners

The winner of the Under 12’s Bird Quiz was Meredith from Great Gidding. Her prize was a beautifully illustrated RSPB book of wildlife poetry signed and donated by local artist and illustrator Carry Akroyd, along with a soft toy owl.

The winner of the Over 12’s Bird Quiz was Vi McCarthey also from Great Gidding. Her prize was a hand crafted blue tit nest box kindly built and donated by Dick Downer.

A big BIG ‘thank you’

A big thank you to everyone who came and supported the evening and a really BIG thank you to all those behind-the-scenes organisers who helped to make the event run so smoothly and so successfully.

Remaining plants

There are still some plants for sale outside the Village Hall until Tuesday morning (14.5.19) – please pop your money into the Honesty Box.

What’s happening at Laurel Farm?

What's happening at Laurel Farm?

Over the past 18 months you might have noticed building work happening at 74 Main St., Great Gidding – previously Laurel Farm. Jan and Margaret have been busy designing and building their own home and office and a further property that will eventually be rented out by Fitzwilliam Estate.

Here’s a few aerial photographs taken by Catalyst Video Services for Jan Maciag at Folium Architects.

Do you have any unwanted garden-related items?

Do you have any unwanted garden-related items?

Don’t throw them away!  We would love to ‘repurpose’ them for our garden bric à brac stall at the Plant Sale.

We’re looking for unusual items to use as planters (baskets, chimney pots, old boots, chamber pots, etc), as well as any decorative planters you no longer need or like, or anything else with a horticultural theme (garden ornaments, bird feeders, bird boxes, garden lights, gardening books) …anything at all that might make an interesting addition to someone else’s garden.

All sales on the evening will help to swell the funds for Jubilee Woods projects.

Let your imagination run riot!

You can either deliver to The Village Shop or call 01832 293240 and we’ll be happy to collect.

More than just a plant sale…….. CAN YOU HELP?

More than just a plant sale........ CAN YOU HELP?

THE GREAT GIDDING PLANT SALE takes place at The Village Hall on Friday 10th MAY from 5.30pm

Lots of people are busy sowing, planting and potting a wide selection of plants for sale on the evening. But we need more pots for all those plants! If you have any spare plastic pots, we’d love to take them off your hands (all sizes welcome).

You can drop clean pots in to either the Village Shop or No.59 Main Street, or if you’d like us to collect them just call 01832 293 236.

Thank you very much.

We hope to see you on what promises to be a fun and sociable evening with lots of plants and garden-related interest, a barbecue and a bar.

Parish Council Clarion – Winter 2018

Parish Council Clarion - Winter 2018

The Clarion was delivered just before Christmas but, if you have misplaced your copy, here is one to refer to.

GREAT AND LITTLE GIDDING PARISH COUNCIL

CLARION – Winter 2018

Winter Gritting Team – We would like to organise a team of people to help with gritting around Great Gidding during periods of cold weather. If you would be interested in helping please contact the Parish Clerk (details below) by the end of December- training and equipment will be provided.

Dog waste bins – the Parish Council have now installed a dog waste bin and bag disposal unit at Little Gidding and we hope that dog owners will make use of this facility.   It has been noticed in recent weeks that bags of dog waste are being dropped on the ground, rather than placed in the bin – PLEASE put filled bags in the bins that are provided.

11th November 2018 – end of World War 1 commemoration event

The Parish Councillors would like to express their thanks to all those who were involved in the “Battle’s Over” Commemoration evening – it was really good to see so many villagers joining this successful event.

Refuse Collection – Huntingdon District Council have advised us that there will be a change to bin collection days in Great Gidding during December:

    • The GREY bin will be collected on Monday 17th and Monday 24th December
    • The BLUE bin will be collected on Monday 10th and then Saturday 22nd December
  • The GREEN bin will be collected on Tuesday 11th and then Monday 24th December

Jubilee Wood Maintenance

There was a good number of helpers who turned up for the Jubilee Wood maintenance session – the hedge was cut between the allotments and the wood, the bullrushes were pulled from the pond and there is an ongoing winter maintenance programme – check thegiddings.org.uk for updates.

Recreation Ground Equipment Upgrade

Exciting news! The Parish Council made an application to the National Lottery Fund for a grant to provide new and/or replacement equipment on the Recreation Ground. We have heard that our application was successful, and that our bid for National Lottery funding to improve the facilities on the Recreation Ground has been approved.  We have recently received a substantial Grant to purchase new equipment so, in Spring 2019, the project will commence to update the equipment.  We would like to invite parishioners to get involved in the plans to improve and enhance the Recreation Ground and so we will publish more information early next year to invite participation.  In the meantime, if you wish to get involved in the plans from the beginning, please contact the Parish Clerk for more details.

Cambridge County Council – Local Highways Initiative Programme

The Parish Council have submitted a bid through the Cambridgeshire County Council Local Highways Initiative (LHI) Programme for funding to make improvements to the roads in the Parish. A high proportion of responses from our 2018 Community Survey highlighted residents’ concerns about traffic speed on the B660 through the village.  Our initial plans for improved signage and improved speed monitoring measures along the B660, including new 40 MPH “buffer zones” at each end of the village, have been provisionally approved and a Parish Council representative presented our case for funding to the LHI Adjudication Panel in Huntingdon on 13 December.  We must now wait until Spring 2019 to find out if we have been successful.  We will keep you informed via a future issue of the Clarion.

Parish Council Vacancies – We need YOU

We still have several vacancies on the Parish Council, so if you have been

thinking about getting involved and perhaps “just haven’t got round to it

yet”, why not contact Julie Trolove our Parish Clerk to find out more.

You would be very welcome.

The Parish Council send you their best wishes for the festive season

St Michael’s Church at Christmas

St Michael's Church at Christmas

Church Restoration

The work at St Michael’s Church is now complete and the church has re-opened, the first service being the Primary School’s Christingle Service last Friday 14th December.

The north aisle window and plaster has been repaired and restored. The opportunity was taken, at the same time, to repair the north aspect of the chancel arch which had moved significantly, leading to a need to carry out stonework repair, employing a stonemason.

In view of all the plaster dust etc, it was decided to arrange for a thorough ‘spring clean’ (can you have one in December?), and this has included attention to high places in the church, not reachable by our normal cleaning.

Family Carol Service

Our Carol Service (aka ‘Carols and Blankets’) takes place next Saturday (December 22nd) at 6pm. This year, as the result of a suggestion, there is one addition. Mince pies and mulled wine will be available BEFORE the service, as well as after. Furthermore, John DeVal will be adding hot chocolate to the drinks. So come along from 5.30pm onwards to warm up your vocal chords.

The service will follow the usual format of favourite carols, interspersed with readings (biblical and secular). The biblical readings will remind us of the events of the birth of Jesus, whilst the secular readings include authors such as Dylan Thomas & Charles Dickens. Appropriately for this year when we mark the centenary of the end of World War 1, there is a reading sent from the trenches. Glen Page (who has been singing at St Michael’s for over thirty years) will sing a couple of solos, and we welcome back Stephen Barber as organist.

The collection will be given to the charity ‘Crisis at Christmas’.

Don’t forget to wrap up warm – there will be some blankets at church if you need one. However hearty singing always seems to banish the cold!

Midnight Communion

Our ‘Midnight Communion’ at St Michael’s takes place on Christmas Eve, starting at 11.30pm. The service will be led by the Vicar, the Revd Mandy Flaherty.
