Village Show grows and grows…

Village Show grows and grows...

The weather was certainly ‘autumnal’ as members of the committee got the hall ready for the annual village show but fears that it would affect the entry numbers were soon allayed as a steady trickle of people arrived (culminating in the inevitable rush just before midday) with their vegetables, fruit and baking. It was wonderful to see and we were particularly pleased that we had so many children’s entries this year, with wonderful creations made from junk as well as weird and creative animals made from vegetables…

Excellent standard

Considering how difficult a growing year it’s been [yes, I know, gardeners always say that] the entries were prolific and of a really high standard. As always, the bakers excelled themselves and the judges were very impressed by the entries in the new class sponsored by the Fox and Hounds pub who kindly donated a meal for two as a prize. The tables were a riot of colour and shapes, strange shapes in the case of the’ biggest growing disaster’! Flowers, vegetables and fruit were the perfect decoration for our village hall and to complement the traditional inside, we had some modern attractions outside including delicious pulled pork rolls, a bouncy castle and face painting.

The wonderful smell of the pork cooking all morning had been torturing several members of the committee for hours but it was worth it as they tucked in once the awards had been given out to the successful entrants. The vegetarians amongst us really appreciated the delicious veggie option which was so full of flavour that we nearly felt sorry for the meat eaters!

We were very grateful for the generous response we had to both the brown envelope auction and the silent auction for the fascinating and colourful whirligig weathervane which was expertly made and donated by Bruce Jordan.

A big thank you to participants and visitors

Thank you to everyone who participated and those who just came along on the day, it was such a great community event and lovely to see so many people having the chance to catch up with each other. We hope to see you again next year.

The Village Show Committee – 7th September 2015

Village Show Schedule 2015

WOOF! Report and pics

WOOF! Report and pics

Saturday 8 August 2015 saw the first ever Great Gidding Dog Show, WOOF, taking place in the garden of Mill Meadow on Chapel End.

A glorious afternoon meant a huge turnout.  There were lots of people and, it seemed, even more dogs, all (especially the owners) hoping for canine glory in the exhibition ring.

Lots of competition for all of the fun classes

There were plenty of fun classes for them to enter, with awards for ‘Most Handsome Dog’, ‘Best Veteran’, ‘Best Puppy’, ‘Dog the Judges would most like to take home’, ‘Best Child Dog Handler’, ‘Most Appealing Eyes’ (dogs’ not their owners!), ‘Waggiest Tail’  and others.

All classes were very well subscribed, with people travelling from near and far to take part and the competition was keen as Judges Cherie Roughton and Sue Shepherd surveyed entrants with a keen and professional (but diplomatic) eye!

Perhaps the most keenly fought class of all was the last  ‘The Dog most closely resembling its Owner’.  Although there was stiff competition from David Woodley with Cleo and Andrew Underwood with Lenny (who really doesn’t usually wear glasses), there was really no contest as Les Floyd and Nike won the day, walking off with the Lookalike Laurels.

And something for the owners and visitors

With a doggy agility course, and teas, plants and tombola for their humans, it was a lovely village event, with lots of chat, laughter and Woofs!

A big thank you

So many people, too many to mention, to thank for such a splendid afternoon but particular thanks must go to Amanda and Ian Williams for throwing open their garden to host what must surely become an annual event.

New book – More Great Gidding History – will shortly be on sale

New book – More Great Gidding History – will shortly be on sale

Local historian Patrick Ellis has just published another book on the history of Great Gidding.

The A4  book – ‘More Great Gidding History’ – is printed in two parts and is completely new information that has been discovered since the publication of the first Great Gidding History book in 2001 (recently re-printed). Whereas the original book was mostly about the village and how it operated this new book is mostly about the people and where they lived.

Great Gidding – The people

Part 1 contains 100 pages discussing new discoveries from research during the past 15 years and histories of some of the principal properties and families in the village.

Who’s lived in YOUR house since the 1600’s?

Part 2 with 110 pages is more of a reference book and contains maps, aerial photos and detailed descriptions of some 60 properties and their occupiers from 1640 onwards plus indexes totalling some 400 different family names.

Formal Launch Day in September

The book is supported by The Earl Fitzwilliam Charitable Trust and its formal launch will be at an evening event at 7.15 pm on Wednesday September 30th in Great Gidding Village Hall.

The main speaker will be Mr Robert Dalgliesh – Chief Agent to the Fitzwilliam Estate. The title of his talk will be “Milton Estate – past and present”.

Introduction by author

The new book will then be introduced by its author Patrick Ellis and wine, cordials and light refreshment will be provided for purchase in the Village Hall.

More Great Gidding HistoryMore Great Gidding History’ – printed in two parts

For those who were unable to visit the History Day last October, there will be a small display of some of the historical photos he has gathered over the years.

John O’Groats to Lands End

John O'Groats to Lands End

Amelia and Sue are currently cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End.

They started the 1,000 mile journey on Friday, and anyone watching the golf will know just what terrible weather they have had to endure so far, but they are pressing on regardless, without a support vehicle. (they declined Andy’s offer)

Sue has meticulously planed  the route and their accommodation, and they will average about 75 miles each day, finishing on Thursday the 30th of July.

They were planning to do it just for fun, but have now decided that they could also raise funds for  good cause. If you would like to show your support, for their efforts then please donate via their just giving sites

Videos of ‘topping-out’ of Great Gidding Mill

Videos of 'topping-out' of Great Gidding Mill

On 21st April as work progresses on the transformation of the mill in Great Gidding, the village turned out to see the final ‘topping-out’ of the project. On a bright and sunny morning a crane arrived to lift the new roof into place onto of the mill tower.

As these ‘major’ events are quite rare in our villages several residents videoed the occasion…
