Aunt Sally at The Fox & Hounds – photos

Aunt Sally at The Fox & Hounds - photos

The weather didn’t deter us hardy villagers from turning out to join in the fun of playing the now traditional August Bank Holiday Monday game of Aunt Sally at The Fox & Hounds. Contestants came in all ages (2 and upwards) and nationalities (Slovakian, Folksworthian to name just a couple) and the new pitch layout proved a great success as there were several ‘oooohhhhs’ and ‘aaaahhhhs’ as dolly legitimately hit the dust (soggy grass). A hushed whisper went round the crowd when Michael produced his own set of ‘sticks’ from a shopping bag… but we soon realised they weren’t magic ones after all.

Yummy feast

The mid-game break was a yummy feast as several people had been very busy making a variety of pies and sandwiches. Lesley Alexander’s ‘Breakfast Pie’ with quails eggs and Julie Trolove’s Fidget pie were delicious – as I’m sure were all the other goodies on offer.

And this year’s winner…

So, onto the final scores and I’m especially delighted to announce the winner of this year’s trophy is… da dah… Paul Crank! Paul also received the bottle of bubbly stuff and, as is customary, a kiss from the bubbly stuff sponsor’s wife.

Thank you very much to Michael, The Fox & Hounds and all of the contributors to a great afternoon.

ARCHAEOLOGY In Great Gidding

ARCHAEOLOGY In Great Gidding

The Great Gidding History Group has been offered the opportunity of having test pits dug by a group of young archaeologists. They are looking for sites where they can dig a test pit on the weekend of Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th October. The test pit will require an area of approx. 1 metre square (or round) to be dug.

What interesting finds might be hidden?
Would you be willing to give permission, and access, for them to dig an area on your property on both days? If so please e-mail: julie.trolove@gmail.com or phone 01832 293591

Please can I bring to your attention the following information!

A resident in the Huntingdon area called Police to report that he had received 2 phone calls, on the 12/08/2014 from a male claiming to be from British Gas. The number this male rang from was 0800 048 404. The caller has then asked the informant if he could have permission to access his account. The Informant has refused and terminated the calls.

The informant has then rang British Gas and informed them of what has happened, British Gas has then advised that this call was a scam and advised the resident to contact ACTION FRAUD and the Police.

The 0800 048 404 is not a recognised number.

Last Monday afternoon an elderly lady was approached by a male in the car park of a supermarket in Ramsey.

Male approached her and thrust a £10 note towards her

The lady was about to load her shopping into her car when the male approached her and thrust a £10 note towards her. The male was described as of Mediterranean appearance, average height, smartly dressed and spoke with an eastern European accent.
The lady was quite taken aback and tried to wave him away. The male spoke very little English and kept pushing the money towards her, all the while ensuring that she was facing away from her trolley which had her handbag on top of the shopping.
Eventually the lady deduced that the male might be after some change so she checked in her purse. she saw that she had none and informed him of this, the male then left. The lady loaded her shopping into her car and went home.

Suspicious looking blond haired woman

Later on she realised that her debit card was missing and had been used in some large value transactions.
Investigations on the store CCTV show that the male had been in the shop and watched the lady use her card at the checkout. He would have had an accomplice and the lady recalls seeing a suspicious looking blond haired woman hanging around by the trolley bay when she returned her trolley.

Please be aware of this type of distraction which will usually be targeted against lone, elderly victims.

Some of you may have noticed grown men (and women) disappearing out of the back of the Fox and Hounds on a Thursday night. Well here’s what’s been going on…

Quite disappointing really!

Thanks to Michael for organising and for the time-lapse footage and to the Fox and Hounds for hosting.

Local Figure Skater Triumphs Again

Local Figure Skater Triumphs Again

Calum Titmus (20) from Great Gidding has just returned to the UK having competed last weekend in Reykjavik at the Icelandic Inclusive Skating and Special Olympics Figure Skating Championships. He competed alongside competitors from Iceland, Great Britain and Canada. After two days of intensive competition, he came away with two Gold medals. These medals were presented to Calum by the President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grimsson. This now means that Calum has won 8 Gold Medals at National and International level in three different sports.

This is all the more remarkable when you realise that Calum is Autistic with severe learning difficulties.

Three golds for Calum
Figure Skating as a Special Olympics sport was brought to Britain for the first time in 2012, and last year Speed Skating was added to the event. Calum entered the Speed Skating event at three distances, winning Gold in each race, and is now the first British Special Olympics Speed Skating Champion. Calum is also heavily involved with Inclusive Skating. This is a charity that is trying to set up a family orientated group at each ice rink in the UK. This group will be for anyone with any visual, hearing, bio-mechanical or learning difficulty, along with family and carers who want to learn to skate. Please look out for local fundraising events for Calum and Inclusive Skating.

Calum’s next competition will be the British Inclusive Skating and Special Olympics Competitions at the beginning of November 2014.

Calum attends Huntingdon Regional College and trains twice a week at Planet Ice in Peterborough. He also trains at the gyms in the One Leisure group and with the Piranhas Swimming Club in Huntingdon as well as the Peterborough Special Olympics Swimming Club. He represented the Eastern Region region in the National Special Olympics Games in Bath last August as a swimmer, winning a gold and silver medal.
