Chill Night and Auction of Promises at Great Gidding Village Hall

Christingle service, Saturday 15th December

Christingle service, Great Gidding

Christingle service

Our annual Christingle Service takes place in St Michael’s Church on Saturday 15th December, starting at 4pm.

The Christingle story

Whilst the Christingle has its origin in the Moravian church, the idea of the three poor children who took their decorated orange to church as a Christmas gift for Jesus has been adopted by churches worldwide.

The three children, who were very poor, wanted to give a gift to Jesus, like the other families at church were doing. The only nice thing they had was an orange, so they decided to give him that. The top was going slightly green, so the eldest cut it out, and put a candle in the hole. They thought it still looked dull, so the youngest girl took her best red ribbon from her hair and attached it round the middle with toothpicks. The middle child had the idea to put a few pieces of dried fruit on the ends of the sticks. They took it to their church on Christmas Day, and whereas the other children sneered at their meagre gift, the priest took their gift and showed it as an example of the true understanding of the meaning of Christmas.

Make your own Christingle

Children (and mums and dads) are invited to come to the church at 3.30pm to help make the Christingles. Don’t worry if you cannot come before the service, there will be Christingles available at the service.

Holy Communion at Steeple Gidding

St Andrew’s Church, Steeple Gidding

St Andrew's, Steeple Gidding

Steeple Gidding Church was closed in the early 1970s, but remains a consecrated building, in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

In recent years, two services annually have been held in the church. The service of Holy Communion on Sunday 2nd December is being held to celebrate the Feast of St Andrew, the apostle to whom the church is dedicated. The service starts at 11am.

There will be no service at St Michael’s Church, Great Gidding that Sunday.

Macmillan Coffee Morning, Sunday 14th October

St Michael’s Church is holding a Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on Sunday 14th October. This will take place at Churchside House (John De Val’s home) starting at 10.30am.

A third of the population will get cancer and it’s the toughest thing most of us will have to face. Macmillan Cancer Support provide practical, medical and financial support, as well as pushing for better cancer care.

We hope that as many as will come along and support us in our bid to raise funds for this important organisation.

UPDATE: Harvest Festival Invitation, Sunday 16th September 2012

UPDATE: Harvest Festival Invitation, Sunday 16th September 2012

This year our Harvest Festival arrangements are different.  Firstly, the service which will be an informal All Age Family Service, takes place in the morning, starting at 11 am.  Secondly after the service, we continue our celebrations as we move across to Crown Cottage (by kind invitation of Sue Shepherd) and enjoy a Harvest Lunch together.

So may I invite you to come and join us.  The service will include all the favourite harvest hymns as well as offering an opportunity to give thanks for the wonder of God’s creation and the food we enjoy.

You are welcome to attend both Service and the Lunch – alternatively you might like to come to one or other of the events and this is also fine!

Times:
Harvest Family Service – 11 am
Lunch in the Garden at Crown Cottage – 12.15 pm

Finally, it would help with the catering arrangements if you could contact either Lois Jordan (293178) or Mary Read (293657) and let them know if you are coming to the lunch.

I look forward to seeing you.

Please watch out for more details.

Mary’s ringing has ap’peal’

Mary Read of Great Gidding rings her first Quarter PealMany congratulations to Mary Read on ringing her first Quarter Peal ‘inside’ of Plain Bob and Grandsire Doubles. A Quarter Peal is about 45 minutes continuous bell ringing requiring a high level of concentration and ringing skill.

Mary was one of six ringers who rang at Holywell Church as part of the Huntingdon District Bellringers Quarter Peal Day on Saturday 16th June this year.
