‘An Evening in the Garden’ (in support of Emily Read’s expedition to the Arctic) took place at Crown Cottage, Great Gidding on Saturday 22nd June and featured the Peter Shepherd Jazz Trio and King’s School Swing Band.

A note from Emily:

Thank you hugely to everybody who supported the summer garden party on the 22nd of June in aid of my BES trip to the arctic this summer, sitting in the blustery wind, listening to the Peter Sheppard Jazz Trio and King’s School Swing Band. Thanks also the Bill the horse and his assistants behind the bar, everybody who helped massively behind the scenes with marquee assemble/dissemble team, all involved in the provision of food, decoration and generally keeping the night running! I will think of you all warmly as I’m trekking across a glacier.

Emily Read

We all wish her a great time and a safe journey.

An Evening in the Garden, Great Gidding

‘Find José’ competition winner announced at Beer and Skittles evening.

The winner of the Giddings website competition ‘Find José’ was announced at last nights Beer and Skittles event held in The Village Hall.

The winning entry was drawn from José’s sombrero by Andrew Alexander. The lucky recipient of the bottle of ‘bubbly’ was Michael Trolove who had managed to find all five hidden José’s around the website. A big thank you to all the entrants and better luck next time.

Staying with the Americas(!)… Here’s a report of the beer and skittles evening by Michael Trolove.

You missed a real treat this evening . Our American theme beers was a monster hit. You can rest assured that our USA cousins over the pond so to speak have mastered the craft brewing to a fine art. I would implore you to seek out the following beers as a fine tribute to Uncle Sams brewing ability: Jeremiah Weed,  Root Brew, a hint of ginger in the tasting and serve with an ice cube; Jeremiah Weed, Sour Mash Brew, a complex beer of hidden tastes but explode on the taste buds; A couple of wheat beers including 312. Not an ITV game show but a craft beer of typical wheat brew taste, sort of flat but not fizzy flat.

A reminder that the end of season bash will now be on Saturday 13th April.

Chilli evening a huge success – thank you!

Chilli evening a huge success - thank you!

A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed to making the Chilli Evening with the “Auction of Promises” such a huge success. It was a really enjoyable evening, mainly as a result of the wonderful food and drink, followed by the excellent performance of our auctioneer who succeeded in persuading people to bid generously (and occasionally unwittingly!) for the many items up for auction. We were delighted to welcome friends from Winwick and to be able to “get our own back” – in the nicest possible way! The evening raised the staggering sum of over £2000 for church funds.

None of this would have happened but for the hard work of Mary Read, Sue Shepherd, Jane Edwards, Anthea Keck and all the team who organised the event. Yet this effort would have been for nothing had not the evening received the tremendous support it did from people far and wide.

Once again thank you to everyone for your time, generosity and support.

Rounders and The Diamond Jubilee Big Lunch – photos

Rounders and The Diamond Jubilee Big Lunch - photos

After a very wet Sunday (see Michael’s Jubilee Wood report) we were all glad to see a glimmer of blue sky for the Diamond Jubilee Big Lunch and village rounders match on the Recreation Field.

With a marquee to shelter from the predicted showers the villagers tucked into their picnics, washed down with FREE beer (a very nice Nene Valley Brewery ale) and wine from the bar.

Rounders – old ‘uns v young ‘uns

No sooner had we finished our first courses then the rounders match began. With two teams – oldies v young ‘uns – there was a wide range of ages (and batting styles) evident and much cheering. In between rounds (and showers) the wellie chucking event took place further along the field, with some spectacular throws and some near misses!
The event was rounded off with a prize giving ceremony most of which seemed to go to the young ‘uns!

Fields in Trust

Another reason to celebrate this weekend was the confirmation that the Great Gidding Recreation Field was now under the ‘Fields in Trust’ scheme which means that the facility is protected for future generations and can no longer be sold for development. More about the ‘Fields in Trust’ project.

Many thanks

Thanks to Michael and Julie Trolove (and many others) for organising the event, installing the marquee, arranging parking, sorting the drinks and the hundred other things that no doubt needed doing that made the event such a success.
