Baking

  1. 1.  Apple Cake
Ingredients

  • 225g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
  • 450g cooking apples
  • Finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • 225g caster sugar, plus extra for dredging
  • 3 large eggs
  • 225g self-raising flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 25g ground almonds
  • 1 tbsp demerara sugar

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan160°C/gas4. Grease a deep 23-24cm springform cake tin and line with baking paper. Peel, core and cut the apples into 1cm pieces, and toss with the lemon juice.

2. Using an electric hand whisk, cream together the butter, caster sugar and lemon zest in a bowl until pale and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, 1 at a time, adding a little flour with each addition to keep the mixture smooth.

3. Sift the remaining flour and the baking powder into the bowl and fold in with the ground almonds. Drain the apple pieces well, then stir into the mixture.

4. Spoon into the prepared cake tin, lightly level the top and sprinkle with the demerara sugar. Bake in the oven for 1 hour or until well-risen, brown and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. If the cake starts to look a little too brown, cover with a sheet of baking paper after about 45 minutes.

5. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes. Remove the cake from the tin and place on a serving plate. Dredge heavily with the extra caster sugar.

March
All the details to follow.

Hopefully the protracted winter will relent soon so that we can get seeds and plants under-way but heading up to Easter 2013 it doesn’t look promising especially for those new potato planters who use Easter as a calendar reference for sowing

‘Find José’ competition winner announced at Beer and Skittles evening.

The winner of the Giddings website competition ‘Find José’ was announced at last nights Beer and Skittles event held in The Village Hall.

The winning entry was drawn from José’s sombrero by Andrew Alexander. The lucky recipient of the bottle of ‘bubbly’ was Michael Trolove who had managed to find all five hidden José’s around the website. A big thank you to all the entrants and better luck next time.

Staying with the Americas(!)… Here’s a report of the beer and skittles evening by Michael Trolove.

You missed a real treat this evening . Our American theme beers was a monster hit. You can rest assured that our USA cousins over the pond so to speak have mastered the craft brewing to a fine art. I would implore you to seek out the following beers as a fine tribute to Uncle Sams brewing ability: Jeremiah Weed,  Root Brew, a hint of ginger in the tasting and serve with an ice cube; Jeremiah Weed, Sour Mash Brew, a complex beer of hidden tastes but explode on the taste buds; A couple of wheat beers including 312. Not an ITV game show but a craft beer of typical wheat brew taste, sort of flat but not fizzy flat.

Chilli evening a huge success – thank you!

Chilli evening a huge success - thank you!

A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed to making the Chilli Evening with the “Auction of Promises” such a huge success. It was a really enjoyable evening, mainly as a result of the wonderful food and drink, followed by the excellent performance of our auctioneer who succeeded in persuading people to bid generously (and occasionally unwittingly!) for the many items up for auction. We were delighted to welcome friends from Winwick and to be able to “get our own back” – in the nicest possible way! The evening raised the staggering sum of over £2000 for church funds.

None of this would have happened but for the hard work of Mary Read, Sue Shepherd, Jane Edwards, Anthea Keck and all the team who organised the event. Yet this effort would have been for nothing had not the evening received the tremendous support it did from people far and wide.

Once again thank you to everyone for your time, generosity and support.

Revd Mary Jepp, Lois Jordan & John DeVal

“AY CARAMBA!” Chilli Night raises over £2000!

"AY CARAMBA!" Chilli Night raises over £2000!

“AY CARAMBA!”  If you were passing down Main Street on the rainy Saturday night of 26 January, you may have noticed the odd sombrero wearing stranger approaching the village hall. You may have heard the strumming of Mexican music, the faint waft of chilli. This was the spectacular ‘Chilli Night and Auction of Promises’ put on on behalf of St Michael’s Church to boost much needed funds.

It was difficult to tell if the occasional tear in people’s eyes were caused by the extra helping of the jalepino sauce, by awe and wonder at the superb Photoshop Mexican montage of images of Gidding scenes (plus occasional residents) or indeed the eye watering generosity of guests bidding for trailer loads of manure or sacks of local potatoes through to cakes and wine or a ride on a train.

Delicious food

The gifts and ‘promises’ were varied and wondrous. The food was generously donated and delicious – the auctioneer was both focused and funny.

Over £2000 raised for St Michael’s Church

The organisers would like to thank everybody who took such an active part and made it such a fun evening. Special thanks to the odd strangers from Winwick who ventured over the border and dug deep into their pockets to help us all raise over £2000 for our Church. We could not have done it without you, whether as guests or helping with contributions towards the food and promises. So Muchas Gracias and Adios Amigos!

Wassail and Wiff Waff evening – January 9th

Wassail and Wiff Waff evening - January 9th

Due to the recent continuous deluge, it was decided that this year the Giddings Wassail celebrations would be run in a slightly different format.

Avoiding the mud

This not only prevented participants from being sucked into the cold and unwelcoming mud of the Jubilee Wood and the allotments, but also meant we could all keep relatively upright in the warmth of the village hall. It all depended on how much mulled cider you had of course.

A car park wassail

Refreshments including homemade nibbles, and beer and cider went down very well and we finally remembered to berate one of the crab apple trees in the car park which should bring us all a plentiful supply of jam next year even if we don’t get any eating apples.

The Giddings Bard

The highlights of the evening included another very eloquent poem from the Giddings Bard, our very own Paul Burgess, who was able to make us smile and nod our heads at the memories of 2012 and that took some doing!
It was amazing to see how quickly recipients of a table tennis bat took to the challenge and almost as quickly remembered the excesses of Christmas as they staggered back to their seats for some light refreshments and bottled oxygen.

Could the Wassail evening encourage the return of the table tennis club we wonder????
