Gidding Gobblers Café – Summer 2017

Gidding Gobblers Café - Summer 2017

What a great summer it’s been!

It only seems like yesterday that Krystyna and Julie had the idea of opening a summer ‘pop-up’ café for cyclists and the local community in the village hall. And what a success Gidding Gobblers Café has been – a great opportunity for villagers to meet up with friends and neighbours and have a chat over coffee, cake and Sunday papers. Our visiting cyclists have given glowing reports on the Gidding Gobblers Facebook page and not only cyclists…walkers, visitors in vintage cars and even vintage tractor drivers have dropped in!

Last Sunday of the season

Four months on and only one weekend left before Gidding Gobblers Café closes up for the season so we thought we’d post some photos of the café and our visitors and say a big ‘thank you’ to those who supported the café.

Well, not quite the last of this year…

Watch out for our special Winter openings though – first one will be Sunday, December 3rd 2017. More details to follow nearer the time.

Don’t forget to like us on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/giddinggobblers/ to keep updated on our Winter opening times.

THANK YOU!

And here’s a few more photos taken between July and October…

Village Show a great success

Village Show a great success

A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who came along and helped to make this year’s produce show such a lovely day.

The weather was wonderful, which was a relief after last year, and we were really amazed at the increase in entries, with nearly 300 exhibits from just under 40 exhibitors. What made it even better was the praise from the judges for the high standard of the entries right across the board.

Fabulous barbecue

The barbecue of smoked beef baps was highly praised too, and I think Gidding must be one of the few, if not the only village show where the process of home smoking the beef required constant checking throughout the night and meant that the chef ended up sleeping downstairs with his dogs! Thank you to both Andrew and Dick for providing something special… as always.

Children’s entertainment

The children’s entertainment also went down very well and it was great to see so many families enjoying the event. If anyone has any new ideas regarding entertainment for the children then please let one of the committee members know as we’re always keen to improve on things, especially when the next show seems to be such a long way off and we’re lulled into a false sense of security.

Thanks again to everyone, we have a great team of people who put the show together and work hard on the day but it’s all worth it when we see everyone having such a good time.

Moth Night

Our local moth experts carried out a moth watch on a calm summers evening on the 28th August. Two locations were chosen within the Jubilee Wood and once the equipment was set up and dusk rolled in all the creatures of the night put in an appearance, mostly moths and the occasional Grasshopper. Its good to report that the wood is healthy in terms of the expected and noted finds in all things moth.

I’m grateful to Andrew Frost and his two colleagues for taking the time to come and survey the Jubilee Wood. They may revisit in the autumn to find species that are more likely to be found in that time of the year.

Plenty to experience in and around our lovely Parish

Plenty to experience in and around our lovely Parish

Well we are now into the spring equinox & many of us will be enticed into the countryside by the sheer pleasure it brings to those of us who walk, cycle, ride or drive.

Everyone is encouraged to make sure though, that they are clearly visible to motorists. Hi-Viz jackets or waist coats are ideal & lights if you cycle.  It is a misconception that these are only needed in the dark or fog!

‘See & Be Seen’ & stay safe.

Main Street now has triangular warning signs for equine riders, to help towards your safety. It would be really polite to see our riders fully aware of the Highway Code as it applies to them. This is most encouraging for motorists, if you expect them to respect your needs.

Dog walkers

Gt.Gidding welcomes its dog walkers, old & new.  Lots have been seen out & about recently. Just a reminder to bin the waste & not leave behind in the bag!

Footpaths, bridleways & byways

We have a lovely selection of footpaths for you all to explore, also bridleways & byways. Please riders, remember that footpaths are for walkers only. If you use a farm track that is designated a footpath, please be sensible. Walkers have priority & if it’s wet please don’t use it, as it cuts it up for everyone.

So we hope you enjoy the fresh air this spring. There is plenty to experience in & around our lovely Parish.

Enjoy!
Rachel Giddens (on behalf of the Parish Council)

Barn Owl sitting on the camera

Barn Owl sitting on the camera

2014 has seen an apparent successful breeding season for Barn Owls in the Gidding Parish. At one location I tried to film some evening activity with a new time lapse camera, really just to understand the potential of this type of camera. So it was with surprise and great delight that on reviewing the film that a Barn Owl had decided to land on the camera and use it as a perch for quite a few seconds. If you look carefully another Owl can be seen in the Ash tree.

The camera is a Brinno TLC200.
