Six local artists are opening their studios this weekend (Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June) as part of Peterborough Open Studios.

Locations

The Open Studios events are held in private homes, studios and public spaces. Each venue displays a red Open Studios banner, and the Peterborough Open Studios brochure map shows all the venues so that you can plan your visits.

It’s worth checking the individual artists’ pages on this Peterborough Open Studios website. Here you will also find information on whether for example the garden will be open, refreshments offered or if there are demonstrations to enjoy.

Visitors are welcome simply to have a look round, to talk to the artists, and to learn about the techniques and materials involved in their work.

Free entry

Entry to each venue is FREE  All the artists will have original work for sale and many will have cards and prints available. Many will also take commissions. There is, of course, absolutely no obligation to buy anything.

Please note that the exhibitors do not generally accept card payments so come prepared with cash or a cheque book.

Coffee mornings at Great Gidding

Coffee mornings at Great Gidding

Several people in the last week or so have asked me if we could start having Coffee Mornings again. I am very happy to
do so, with some revision to take into account changed circumstances.
I would suggest that we revert to holding them in the Village Hall, as we did originally. Several reasons; Covid is still with
us and may increase after the summer and there is more space in the Village Hall and people, myself included, may be
reluctant to host gatherings in their homes. Also, the Village Hall is a ‘neutral venue’ to which everybody can go.

What I propose is –
Meet at the Village Hall on alternate Tuesdays at 10.30 to about noon, initially on 28th June and 12 th and 26th
July, with no meeting in August as before.

Coffee, tea and biscuits will be provided without charge but a voluntary contribution of £1 per person to go to
Village Hall funds to cover electricity and so on.
A couple of volunteers will be needed to assist if I am unable to attend.
Keeping it simple and easily managed is important. Please pass information to others.

Thank you.

'Summer Music' at St Michael's Church

The weekend of 11th & 12th June sees two musical events in St Michael’s Church.

Firstly, on Saturday 11th June, there is a concert called ‘Summer Music’. We welcome back the St Peter’s Singers from Peterborough, who will be singing beautiful choral music from Handel, via folk songs, to Cole Porter. Their musical director, Jeremy Jepson, will also play a couple of organ pieces,
The concert starts at 7.30pm.
Tickets are £10 (purchased in advance) and £12 (available at the church door on the night). To purchase your tickets in advance, contact Sue Shepherd (tel: 293479) or email her (shepnsue@btinternet.com). Your ticket price includes a glass of wine and nibbles in the interval.

Jubilee Wood and Orchard

Jubilee Wood and Orchard

This coming Saturday, 5th February, there will be a working party in the Jubilee Wood, to tidy up the recently trimmed shrubs and trees. Michael will be there from 9.30AM, come along with heavy duty gloves as the main activity will be to add to the “dead hedge” (a structure made of the trimmings/prunings, to create a habitat for wildlife – come and see or take a look at the video below).

In addition, thanks to donations to the Great Gidding Charity, fruit trees have been purchased to be planted in the remaining spaces in the Orchard. These fruit trees have Royal associated names and will be planted to mark the Accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne, and the start of her Platinum Jubilee Year. At 11.00AM, there will be a rest from the activity, bring along a flask (you choose the contents), there will be cake, and we will drink a toast to Her Majesty.

Please spread the word to your neighbours, and join us at 9.30 AM or 11.00 AM.

“A great Great Gidding event”

Great Gidding Christmas Cornucopia 2021

How lovely to be able to meet up with people again’

The village hall looks spectacular’

A great Great Gidding event’

So good to do something normal and Christmassy again’

Those are just a few of the comments made by visitors to our second Christmas Cornucopia in the Village Hall on 27 November.

Despite the weather doing its best to discourage anyone from leaving the warmth of their home, you came in your droves to support the first ‘proper’ event in the village hall since the pandemic put paid to so many plans.

With a wide-ranging array of quality goods and crafts, there was plenty to attract those in search of Christmas gifts for youngster and oldster alike.  All the stallholders reported a busy afternoon while the tombola was as popular as ever.

The main hall was, indeed, beautifully arrayed in a festival of lights and greenery, all adding to the festive atmosphere.  In the small hall, tea, coffee and cakes were popular and gave people who hadn’t seen each other for some time the chance to sit and chat for a while.

A huge thank you

Such a successful event doesn’t happen by accident and our thanks go to everyone who played a part in making this such an enjoyable afternoon, with lots of smiles and happy faces.  So, to the organising and hall decorating teams, the printing and publicity gurus, our brilliant stallholders, the people who so generously donated to the tombola and the raffle hamper and, of course, to everyone who visited and contributed so much to the atmosphere, a huge THANK YOU!

Raffle winner

Many congratulations to Sue Beck. You are the lucky winner of the Christmas Cornucopia Raffle Hamper, with the ticket number 358.

PS:  Although everyone complied with Covid recommendations and the hall was kept well-ventilated throughout, we were sorry to hear that some people (both visitors and stallholders) were ‘pinged’ after the event, to advise they had been close to someone who had tested positive.  Happily, as far as we know, all those contacted subsequently tested negative for Covid.
