Rooted Christmas trees for the Jubilee Wood

Rooted Christmas trees for the Jubilee Wood

Here’s something to ponder on the lead up to  Christmas. What type of tree will it be sat in the corner of the room, heavily draped in tinsel and a fine looking fairy/angel / Action Man adorning the leading tip.  There are a couple of ex Christmas trees (Nordic fir trees) that have successfully grown in the Jubilee Wood from pot bound 2ft tall specimens to a healthy 10ft to 12ft. It does take time for them to get going and weed control is a must around the base.

There is always room for more specimen trees and evergreens so if you would give consideration to buying a rooted Christmas tree and donate it after the festive season we will endeavour to plant it in a good growing medium and the usual caveat with the natural world, despite the best endeavours it may not grow.

Moth night part 2

Moth night part 2

As suggested in the previous post a second autumn visit might be on the cards and this duly happened. The moth team set up at a couple of locations in the Jubilee Wood on a calm  moist September evening. Once again the bright lights shone and the moth visitors couldn’t resist. Not so many species this time which reflects the season and also evening conditions can be so fickle to be the difference between good and poor moth activity.

Listed below are the moth species seen and recorded and a separate list of Caddis flies identified.

Particular thanks  to Andrew Frost, Kevin Royles and Barry Dickerson for taking the time to lift the lid on the moth world in the Jubilee Wood.

Village Show a great success

Village Show a great success

A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who came along and helped to make this year’s produce show such a lovely day.

The weather was wonderful, which was a relief after last year, and we were really amazed at the increase in entries, with nearly 300 exhibits from just under 40 exhibitors. What made it even better was the praise from the judges for the high standard of the entries right across the board.

Fabulous barbecue

The barbecue of smoked beef baps was highly praised too, and I think Gidding must be one of the few, if not the only village show where the process of home smoking the beef required constant checking throughout the night and meant that the chef ended up sleeping downstairs with his dogs! Thank you to both Andrew and Dick for providing something special… as always.

Children’s entertainment

The children’s entertainment also went down very well and it was great to see so many families enjoying the event. If anyone has any new ideas regarding entertainment for the children then please let one of the committee members know as we’re always keen to improve on things, especially when the next show seems to be such a long way off and we’re lulled into a false sense of security.

Thanks again to everyone, we have a great team of people who put the show together and work hard on the day but it’s all worth it when we see everyone having such a good time.

Can you help with strimming?

We are fortunate in having a willing team of people who regularly mow the churchyard.  However there is a limit as to how close the mowers can get to gravestones and the church building. So we need someone who can devote some time to strimming around the gravestones etc. in the churchyard.  If you can help please contact either John De Val (293417) or Michael Keck (293357).
